Purpose	N-acetyl L-carnosine is a dipeptide (beta-alanyl-L-histidine) found exclusively in tissues of animal origin. The natural dipeptide carnosine was discovered back in 1900 in muscle tissue. It turned out that it and related histidine-containing dipeptides (HSDs) are widely represented in our body and perform a number of important functions. In a living cell, excessive oxidation leads to damage and destruction of vital molecules and even death. L-carnosine is part of the body's natural antioxidant system, protecting its cells from oxidative damage. It is able to neutralize free radicals and bind metal ions. In cosmetic formulations it retains this activity and can play the role of a water-soluble antioxidant. In most experiments, it was shown that L-carnosine accelerates wound healing and controls inflammation, and the damage heals “qualitatively”, without scars. This property is very attractive for cosmetics aimed at solving the problems of damaged and inflamed skin, intended for rehabilitation after traumatic procedures. This antioxidant peptide, which also supports the normal condition of the skin, can also be included in products that help the skin fight external stress factors and the aging process. Another feature of carnosine is that it is an effective proton buffer that can be used in acid peels.
