Description and Key Properties
Muscenone (INCI: Muscenone), also known by various trade names such as Musk Ketone, Synthetic Musk, Firmenich Musk, or Macrocyclic Musk, is a highly prized synthetic macrocyclic musk. It is celebrated for its remarkably clean, soft, and creamy musk aroma with subtle leathery nuances, making it an incredibly versatile and sophisticated addition to any fragrance palette. Unlike some traditional musks, Muscenone offers a pure and non-animalic scent profile, ensuring a modern and elegant finish.
Key properties:
- Aromatic Profile: Possesses a clean, soft, and warm musk scent with delicate creamy and leathery undertones, providing a luxurious and comforting base.
- Enhances Sillage: Significantly boosts the "trail" or projection of a fragrance, making it more noticeable and long-lasting.
- Fixative and Stabilizer: Acts as an excellent fixative for volatile top and heart notes, preventing them from dissipating too quickly and ensuring the fragrance evolves gracefully over time. It provides a stable foundation for the entire composition.
- Adds Depth and Volume: Contributes a beautiful amber-musk depth and rich volume to compositions, making them feel fuller and more rounded.
- Skin Safe & Hypoallergenic: A highly valued attribute, making it suitable for a wide range of skin-contact products, minimizing the risk of irritation.
- Solubility: Easily soluble in alcohols and oils, ensuring seamless integration into most cosmetic and perfumery formulations. It is insoluble in water.
- Color Stability: As a colorless to pale yellow liquid, it helps maintain the visual integrity of your finished products, especially in clear or light-colored bases.

Instructions for Lotion Preparation:
- Sanitization: Thoroughly sanitize all equipment (beakers, stirring rods, containers) with isopropyl alcohol and allow them to air dry completely.
- Phase A (Water Phase): In a heat-resistant beaker, combine distilled water and glycerin. Heat on a double boiler or in a microwave (using short bursts) until approximately 70-75°C (158-167°F).
- Phase B (Oil Phase): In a separate heat-resistant beaker, combine emulsifying wax, shea butter, sweet almond oil, and cetyl alcohol. Heat on a double boiler or in a microwave until approximately 70-75°C (158-167°F), ensuring all solid ingredients are fully melted.
- Emulsification: Slowly pour the hot water phase (Phase A) into the hot oil phase (Phase B) while continuously stirring with a hand mixer or immersion blender on low speed. Continue mixing until a stable, homogeneous emulsion forms. The lotion will thicken as it cools.
- Cooling: Allow the emulsion to cool to below 40°C (104°F), stirring occasionally to prevent a skin from forming on the surface.
- Phase C (Cool Down): Once the lotion has cooled to below 40°C (104°F), add the Muscenone, your chosen fragrance oil, preservative, and Vitamin E. Stir thoroughly until all ingredients are fully incorporated and the lotion is uniform.
- pH Adjustment (Optional but Recommended): Check the pH of the finished lotion. For body lotions, an ideal pH is typically between 5.0 and 6.0. Adjust if necessary using a diluted solution of lactic acid (to lower pH) or sodium bicarbonate (to raise pH), adding drop by drop and rechecking.
- Packaging: Transfer the finished lotion into clean, sterilized pump bottles or jars.
Recommendations for Use:
- Muscenone Dosage: The recommended dosage for Muscenone in cosmetics is 0.05% to 1%. Our recipe uses 0.5%, which is effective for adding a noticeable, long-lasting musk note and enhancing the overall fragrance. You can adjust this slightly based on the desired intensity.
- Incorporation: Muscenone is added during the cool-down phase (below 40°C) along with other heat-sensitive ingredients like fragrance oils and preservatives, to ensure its aromatic integrity and stability.
- Solubility: Ensure your formulation is oil or alcohol-based, as Muscenone is not water-soluble. It will seamlessly integrate into emulsion-based products like lotions and creams.
- Fragrance Blending: Muscenone's clean, soft musk profile makes it an excellent base note that complements a wide variety of fragrance types, from floral and fruity to woody and oriental.
- Storage: Store the finished lotion in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight to preserve the integrity of the ingredients and the fragrance.
- Batch Testing: Always perform a small test batch to ensure the fragrance and stability are to your liking before committing to a larger production.
