Citronella essential oil as a volatile functional ingredient for aroma development and sensory stabilization in formulations
Citronella essential oil is a plant-derived raw material obtained by steam distillation of Cymbopogon species. In B2B manufacturing this functional ingredient is used across cosmetic, fragrance, cleaning and SPA formulations due to its volatile terpene composition and ability to create a stable aromatic profile.
Technologically, the oil is lipophilic and requires solubilization for water-based systems. When properly dispersed, it ensures uniform distribution of volatile compounds and consistent performance. In industrial manufacturing, control of temperature, light exposure and oxidation is critical to maintain stability.
Properties and functional role
Citronella essential oil functions as an aromatic ingredient that defines the sensory identity of a formulation. It enables gradual release of volatile compounds and enhances fragrance complexity.
It is compatible with emulsifiers, surfactants and emollients when introduced correctly into formulation systems.
Properties and result
The oil provides a stable fragrance profile and improves sensory perception. Proper solubilization prevents phase separation and ensures uniform distribution.
The result is a formulation with consistent organoleptic properties and stable performance during storage.
Purpose
Used in cosmetics, perfumery, SPA products and cleaning formulations. Applied in creams, gels, shampoos and aromatic systems.
Also used in nutraceutical and technical formulations as an aromatic component without medical claims. Suitable for contract manufacturing.
Application
Applied in oil and water-based systems. Requires solubilizer for aqueous formulations. Added at final stage under controlled temperature.
It integrates easily into formulation and can be combined with other aromatic ingredients.
Recipe
Cleansing body gel with citronella
Ingredients:
Water — 64 g
