Product Description
Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride: The Ultimate Conditioning Agent for Hair and Skin Care
Discover the exceptional conditioning and antistatic properties of Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, a water-soluble quaternary ammonium derivative of guar gum. This versatile cosmetic ingredient is a highly effective cationic polymer that significantly enhances the feel, manageability, and appearance of both hair and skin. Derived from the seeds of the guar bean (Cyamopsis tetragonolobus), this modified natural polymer offers a multitude of benefits, making it an indispensable component in a wide array of personal care formulations.
Applications and Areas of Use in Cosmetics:
Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride's unique structure and positive charge allow it to interact effectively with the negatively charged surfaces of hair and skin, providing numerous benefits across various cosmetic applications:
-
Hair Care Products:
- Shampoos: Acts as a conditioning agent, improving wet and dry combability, reducing frizz and flyaways, and imparting a smooth, silky feel to the hair. It also helps to deposit other conditioning agents and oils onto the hair shaft.

- Hair Masks and Treatments: Offers deep conditioning benefits, improving hair texture, reducing breakage, and adding noticeable smoothness and manageability.
- Styling Products (Mousses, Gels, Sprays): Contributes to hold and manageability without leaving a sticky or heavy residue. It can also help to improve the overall feel and appearance of styled hair.
- Hair Serums and Leave-in Conditioners: Smooths the hair cuticle, reduces frizz, and adds shine, making hair look healthier and more polished.
-
Skin Care Products:
- Body Washes and Shower Gels: Imparts a smooth and conditioned feel to the skin, reducing the stripping effect of surfactants and leaving skin feeling soft and hydrated after cleansing.
- Lotions and Creams: Provides a non-greasy, silky feel and can help to improve the spreadability and absorption of the product. It also offers a mild conditioning effect on the skin.
- Facial Cleansers: Can help to mitigate the drying effects of cleansing agents, leaving the skin feeling softer and more comfortable.
- Shaving Creams and Foams: Enhances lubricity, providing a smoother shave and reducing skin irritation.

Instructions:
- Heat the distilled water and Cetearyl Alcohol in a heat-resistant beaker to 70-75°C.
- In a separate heat-resistant beaker, heat Behentrimonium Chloride and Cetyl Alcohol to 70-75°C until melted.
- Slowly add the oil phase (Step 2) to the water phase (Step 1) while stirring continuously with a mixer or homogenizer until a uniform emulsion forms.
- Continue stirring and allow the emulsion to cool down to below 40°C.
- Once cooled, add the Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride and stir until fully dissolved.
- Add Glycerin, Fragrance, and Preservative. Mix well to ensure even distribution.
- Adjust the pH if necessary.
- Transfer the finished conditioner to a clean container.
Application Recommendations:
- After shampooing, apply a generous amount of the conditioner to damp hair, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends.
- Leave the conditioner on for 2-3 minutes to allow it to work its magic.
- Rinse thoroughly with water.
- For deeper conditioning, leave the conditioner on for a longer period (5-10 minutes) and then rinse.
- The recommended usage level of Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride typically ranges from 0.1% to 1.0% in hair care formulations and 0.1% to 0.5% in skin care formulations, depending on the desired effect.
- When incorporating Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride into a formula, it is best to add it to the water phase with good agitation to ensure proper hydration and prevent clumping.
- Ensure the pH of the final product is within the stable range for Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, typically between 3.0 and 11.0.
