What makes a full liter of preservative practical for continuous production lines
Phenoxyethanol remains one of the most widely used preservatives across the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and household chemical industries worldwide. The 1 liter format is built for studio and industrial manufacturing, where consistent batch-to-batch performance matters as much as raw preservative efficacy. This ingredient belongs to the Preservatives and Antioxidants category, gathering components designed to protect water-based formulations from bacterial, yeast and mold contamination.
Global demand for phenoxyethanol comes primarily from skincare and haircare manufacturing, decorative cosmetics, wet wipes, liquid soaps and pharmaceutical formulations, but it also plays a role in water-based household cleaning products. Its broad compatibility with emulsifiers, thickeners and active ingredients makes it a reliable choice for formulators running conveyor-scale production rather than one-off batches.
In real production recipes, phenoxyethanol is rarely used alone. To widen protection against yeasts and certain mold strains, formulators frequently combine it with a broad-spectrum system such as Sharomix, or with the milder blend Salimix MCI Preservative, which helps reduce the overall preservative load while maintaining a wide range of protection. When a formula relies on hard water or contains mineral salts, adding the chelating agent Trilon-B is a common step, since it binds metal ions and noticeably boosts the efficiency of the whole preservation system.
Recommended dosage typically falls between 0.4 and 1 percent of the total formula weight, depending on the recipe type and contamination risk. The ingredient should be added during the cooling stage of an emulsion, at temperatures not exceeding 40 degrees, to avoid partial evaporation and preserve the intended concentration. It remains stable across a wide pH range, which makes it convenient for both acidic and neutral formulations.
Store phenoxyethanol in a tightly closed container, in a dry area away from direct sunlight, at room temperature and away from heat sources or open flame. Under proper storage conditions a full liter retains its declared properties for an extended period, which is particularly valuable for facilities running continuous production cycles rather than occasional small batches.
Lightweight facial emulsion, 600 gram batch
Distilled water 480 g
Glycerin 25 g
Plant-based emulsifier 35 g
Jojoba oil 40 g
Phenoxyethanol 6 g
Fragrance oil 4 g
Heat the water phase with glycerin to 70 degrees, melt the oil phase with the emulsifier separately to the same temperature, then combine both phases and homogenize until uniform. Cool the mixture under constant stirring to 38-40 degrees, add phenoxyethanol and fragrance oil, mix for a few more minutes and transfer into clean containers for final stabilization.
