Seaweed-Based Ingredient for Body Care and Bulk Manufacturing
Laminaria, commonly known as kelp or sea kelp, has long been valued in cosmetic manufacturing for its rich content of natural polysaccharides, marine minerals and iodine. The extract is obtained through a water-glycerin extraction process that preserves a broad complex of active compounds in a stable liquid form. This ingredient belongs to the Liquid Extracts category, which brings together plant-derived raw materials used across skin care, hair care and related industrial formulations.
The most common application of laminaria extract is in body-firming and anti-cellulite products, as well as formulations aimed at oily and problematic skin, and hair care lines targeting oily scalp conditions. Alginic acids and the mineral complex naturally present in kelp support skin texture, help maintain tissue hydration and contribute to a firmer appearance, which is why the extract is widely used in body wraps, gels, lotions and masks. In the spa and thalassotherapy industry, laminaria extract serves as a base ingredient for detox and drainage-focused treatments.
For industrial-scale production, the recommended dosage ranges from 2 to 8 percent of the total formula weight, depending on the concentration of other active ingredients and the intended purpose of the product. The extract should be added at the final stage of formulation, at a temperature not exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, to prevent degradation of heat-sensitive compounds. It pairs well with other botanical extracts, including Yarrow extract, which enhances the toning effect in body formulations, and Sage Extract, commonly used in products designed for oily and blemish-prone skin.
Beyond cosmetics, laminaria extract is also applied in the production of functional food supplements and iodine-enriched beverages, as well as in pet care formulations. The 100 ml packaging is well suited for home-based cosmetic making, formula testing and small trial batches before scaling up to larger production runs. The extract should be stored in a tightly sealed container, kept in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, at a temperature not exceeding room temperature. Once opened, it is recommended to use the contents within the shelf life specified by the manufacturer, keeping the bottle free from moisture and contamination.
The extract combines well with gelling agents, emulsifiers and preservatives typically used in the water phase of formulations, as well as with carrier oils in two-phase product development. This compatibility allows formulators to build multifunctional products suitable for both mass-market and niche cosmetic lines.
Marine Detox Body Gel
Distilled water 200 ml
Gelling agent (xanthan gum or equivalent) 4 g
Laminaria Extract 30 ml
Plantain Extract 15 ml
Glycerin 10 ml
Emulsifier and preservative as recommended by manufacturer 6 g
Dissolve the gelling agent gradually into room-temperature distilled water, stirring thoroughly until fully hydrated and free of lumps. Add the glycerin, then gently blend in the Plantain Extract together with the laminaria extract, making sure the mixture temperature stays below 40 degrees Celsius. Finally, add the preservative and emulsifier, mix until uniform, and transfer the finished gel into a clean storage container.
