Indian wintergreen essential oil BIO, 100 ml
Indian wintergreen is Gaultheria fragrantissima, an evergreen shrub of the heath family that grows in the hills of India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. The card gives the INCI name Gaultheria Fragrantissima Oil and India as the country of production. The oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves, and this lot is BIO. The 100 ml bottle suits small producers of body care and home fragrance who need a modest stock of a very potent material.
A single dominant molecule
Wintergreen oil is unusual among essential oils because one component makes up most of it: methyl salicylate, typically well over 90 %. That explains the familiar sweet, minty, balm-like scent that many people link with sports rubs and old-fashioned chewing gum.
Where it is used
Warming-feel massage and sports body products
The cooling-sweet scent is strongly associated with after-workout body care, massage balms and foot products, where only a small amount is needed.
Room and car fragrance
In diffusers and sachets, a trace of wintergreen gives a crisp, clean, slightly nostalgic note that pairs well with peppermint and eucalyptus.
Fragrance accents
Perfumers use it in tiny doses to add a sweet, minty lift to fougère and herbal accords.
Handling note
Keep out of reach of children. Not for internal use.
Working levels and method
Add it to the oil phase below 40 °C, or premix it with a solubiliser for water-based products. Weigh small quantities on accurate scales instead of counting drops.
Blending partners
Peppermint, eucalyptus, rosemary, camphor-type notes and lavender all sit comfortably with wintergreen. Sweet florals tend to be overpowered by its strong, distinctive character.
Trial batch: massage balm, 100 g
Melt 25 g of beeswax and 30 g of shea butter, then add 44 g of sunflower oil. Cool to 45 °C, add 0.3 g of tocopherol, 0.4 g of wintergreen oil and 0.3 g of rosemary oil, stir and pour into tins with secure lids. Label the balm clearly for external use only. Carrier oils are in wholesale liquid oils, and butters and waxes in wholesale solid oils and butters. Other herbal and minty oils are listed under wholesale essential oils, with smaller sizes under essential oils.
Storage
Store tightly closed, in a cool, dark place.

Using wintergreen in finished products
Wintergreen is valued in massage balms, warming body butters and sports rubs, where its sweet, minty, cooling note gives an immediate sense of freshness. In a balm, melt the waxes and butters, let the mixture cool slightly and stir in the oil just before pouring. In creams, add it to the cooled emulsion below 40 °C. Start low, around 0.5 % in leave-on products, because the scent is very strong and a little goes a long way. In foot creams and refreshing gels it combines well with peppermint and rosemary, and in shower gels with eucalyptus for a sporty profile. Test every new base for colour and odour stability over a few weeks before scaling up.
Blending ideas
For a fresh foot cream, combine wintergreen with peppermint and tea tree. For a warming after-sport balm, pair it with ginger, black pepper and rosemary. In a muscle massage oil based on sunflower or sweet almond oil, a small dose of wintergreen with lavender gives a calm, cooling profile.
