What Green Cognac Oil Is
Green cognac oil, also called wine lees oil or lie de vin oil, is distilled from wine lees: the yeast and grape residues that settle after wine has fermented. Its botanical source is therefore the grapevine, Vitis vinifera, which matches the INCI name on the product card, Vitis vinifera oil. The card lists Germany as the country of production and a 100 ml bottle.
The name refers to its smell, which recalls cognac. The green colour has traditionally been linked to distillation in copper stills.
Composition and character
The oil consists mainly of ethyl and isoamyl esters of fatty acids formed during fermentation. That explains its powerful dry, winy, fruity odour with green apple facets and an oily depth. It is very diffusive and long lasting, so it is used in trace amounts.
Reference data for this type of material describe it as follows.
Its colour ranges from green to blue-green. The oil is soluble in most fixed oils and in mineral oil, as well as in 80 % ethanol, but it is only very slightly soluble in propylene glycol and does not dissolve in glycerin.
Applications
Perfumery
Colognes, fougères and aftershaves gain a sparkling, boozy lift from just a drop. In gourmand compositions it helps tame excessive sweetness.
Grooming products
Beard oils, aftershave balms and men’s shower gels where a wine-like accent fits the concept.
Usage guidance
Work at hundredths of a percent in the finished product. For accurate dosing, prepare a 10 % working dilution in alcohol or a light carrier oil. No heating is needed, and the oil goes straight into the oil phase or the fragrance concentrate.
Compatibility
Bergamot, clary sage, ylang ylang, lavender, vetiver and cedarwood are classic partners. Its solubility in fixed oils makes it easy to use in anhydrous products, while glycerin-rich bases are a poor match.
Product data
Green cognac oil is produced from Vitis vinifera wine lees and listed under the INCI name Vitis vinifera oil. The card describes its odour as cognac-like. It is made in Germany and packed in 100 ml.
Example: aftershave splash, 100 g
To make 100 g of splash, combine 55 g of ethanol 96 % with 37 g of distilled water, 3 g of glycerin and 4 g of witch hazel water. The fragrance is built from 0.6 g of lavender essential oil, 0.3 g of cedarwood essential oil and just 0.1 g of green cognac oil.
Blend the essential oils and the cognac oil into the ethanol first. Mix water, glycerin and witch hazel water separately, then add them slowly to the alcohol phase while stirring. Let it rest for a week, chill and filter.
Storage and related sizes
Keep in a dark, tightly closed bottle in a cool place. For production volumes, the same oil comes as green cognac oil 1 L; more materials are in wholesale essential oils.
