What Dwarf Oregano Oil Is
Dwarf or compact oregano oil comes from Origanum compactum, a small oregano species traded as Compact oregano or Origan compact. The product card lists the INCI name Origanum Compactum Oil, India as the country of production and a 100 ml bottle. BIO is part of the product name; if you need proof of organic status for this specific lot, request the certificate separately.
From a technical point of view it is a phenolic essential oil. Origanum compactum oils are typically rich in carvacrol, with thymol, gamma-terpinene and p-cymene as further characteristic components. Those phenols give the oil its sharp herbal smell and also set the limits on how much of it can go into a product.
Key characteristics
The oil has a powerful, warm, spicy-herbal scent with a medicinal phenolic edge. Its high phenol content makes the undiluted oil irritating to skin and mucous membranes. It blends well with citrus oils, rosemary, lavender and thyme.
Applications
Foot care and deodorising products
Foot powders, foot gels and sprays suit its herbal character, and only a small amount is needed.
Rinse-off products
Shower gels and shampoos with a bold herbal scent. Short skin contact keeps the irritation risk lower than in leave-on products.
Household fragrance
Surface sprays and textile fresheners where the oil acts purely as a scent component.
Usage guidance
Keep the oil below 1 % in leave-on body products and avoid facial products altogether, while 0.3 to 0.5 % is enough in rinse-off products. Add it below 40 °C to the oil phase, or premix it with a solubiliser for water-based systems. It is not suitable for products for children or for use around the eyes.
Compatibility
Phenols can interact with some preservatives and with polystyrene packaging, so check stability in the final container. Clear aqueous products need polysorbate 20 or a similar solubiliser at a ratio of at least 3 parts to 1 part oil.
Product data
The botanical source is Origanum compactum, and the INCI name is Origanum Compactum Oil. The oil is also known as compact oregano or Origan compact. It is produced in India and sold in a 100 ml pack.
Example: herbal surface spray, 200 ml
For 200 ml of spray, premix 1 g of dwarf oregano oil with 3 g of polysorbate 20. Dissolve this blend in 40 g of ethanol 96 % and top up with 156 g of distilled water.
Mix the oil with the polysorbate first until uniform. Add the ethanol, then the water in small portions while stirring. Fill into a trigger spray bottle and label it for surfaces only, not for skin. The oil content is 0.5 %.
Storage
Store the container tightly closed somewhere cool and dark. Related materials are in wholesale essential oils, and solubilisers and emulsifiers in wholesale emulsifiers.
