Calamus Essential Oil, 50 ml Lab Bottle
Calamus oil is distilled from the rhizome of sweet flag, Acorus calamus, a reed-like plant of wetlands and riverbanks. This listing is a 50 ml bottle produced in India. Other names used in the trade include Oil of Calamus, Calamus aromaticus, essence de calamus and oleum calami.
A 50 ml size suits evaluation work: smelling the material, building trial accords and checking how it sits next to your existing palette before committing to a larger volume.
Odour character
Calamus gives a warm, woody and spicy note with a damp, rooty depth that is hard to imitate. Perfumers value it as a fixative in oriental, chypre and leather directions. A pronounced camphor edge is usually a sign of a weaker lot, so compare samples side by side.
Card warnings and regulatory points
The product card says to use the oil only for a short time and not during pregnancy. In addition, calamus oils contain asarone, and IFRA restricts asarone in finished products. The permitted dose of calamus oil therefore has to be worked out from the asarone figure in the documents for your specific lot, not from a general rule of thumb.
Practical applications
Perfume and fragrance concentrates
Tiny additions give depth, earthiness and longer tenacity to woody or amber compositions.
Scented products for the skin types on the card
The card lists oily, normal and combination skin. In such products calamus appears as a minor fragrance component within the asarone limit.
Home fragrance
Reed diffusers and room sprays where an unusual rooty accent is wanted.
Handling in the lab
Weigh calamus on a balance rather than counting drops, because even 0.1 g changes an accord noticeably. It dissolves in ethanol and carrier oils; water-based bases need a solubiliser from our emulsifier range. Label each trial with the lot number so the asarone calculation can be traced later.
Scaling up
Once the trials are approved, the same material is listed as calamus essential oil in 1 L. Partner materials such as vetiver, patchouli and frankincense are in the wholesale essential oils section, and carrier oils for dilution in wholesale liquid oils.
Lab example: woody accord trial, 20 g
Weigh 12 g of perfumer's alcohol into a glass vial. Add 4 g of cedarwood essential oil, 2.6 g of vetiver essential oil, 1.2 g of bergamot essential oil and 0.2 g of calamus essential oil.
Cap, shake and leave to mature for one week at room temperature. Smell on a blotter at 5 minutes, 3 hours and the next day, then prepare a second vial without calamus to hear what it contributes. Calamus makes up 1 % of this concentrate, which is a test material and not a finished product.
Storage
Keep the bottle tightly closed in a dry place away from sunlight. Write the opening date on the label and use opened bottles within a reasonable time.
