Why Chaulmoogra Butter Earns a Place in Blemish-Prone Skin Formulas
Chaulmoogra oil comes from the seeds of a tropical tree traditionally used across Southeast Asia in folk skin remedies, and today it has found a firm place in modern formulation work focused on troubled and blemish-prone skin. Since it stays solid at room temperature, it is grouped within our butters category, alongside other rich, dense fats that require gentle melting before use in a recipe.
The most common use for chaulmoogra oil is in creams, ointments, and balms designed for skin prone to breakouts and irritation, as well as scalp and hair care formulas. Formulators reach for it when building targeted balms for problem areas, after-shave products, and foot care lines, since its firm texture gives structure and stability to sticks, salves, and balms across a wide range of climates and shelf conditions. It performs particularly well as a stabilizing base fat that keeps finished products from softening too much in warmer storage conditions.
In a typical formula, chaulmoogra oil is added during the oil phase, melted gently at around 60-70 degrees Celsius alongside other solid fats before liquid oils and actives are introduced. A usage rate of 5 to 20 percent is common depending on the firmness and intended texture of the final product. It blends well with other specialty exotic fats, such as Mafura Butter, which adds a richer nourishing profile to the blend, and Unrefined Cocoa Butter, contributing extra firmness and a pleasant texture on application. For formulas requiring a firmer stick base, combining chaulmoogra oil with Unrefined Palm Oil is a practical option.
The 1 kg package size is suited to formulators working at a consistent production scale - small cosmetic workshops, product development labs, and brands producing skincare lines in regular batches. This quantity supports several production runs without frequent reordering and makes cost calculations straightforward when scaling a recipe up.
Store chaulmoogra oil in a tightly sealed container, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Under proper storage conditions, the oil retains its firm texture and quality throughout its stated shelf life.
