Bulk Sumatran Benzoin Resinoid for Industrial Fragrance Manufacturing
Benzoin gum, also known as Sumatran resinoid, is a thick aromatic extract with a warm, balsamic, vanilla-sweet undertone obtained from the resinous sap of Styrax trees growing on the island of Sumatra. This ingredient belongs to the category of Resins and Resinoids, which brings together natural fragrance fixatives and bases widely used across fragrance, cosmetic, candle and food production. The 1 kg format is aimed primarily at production facilities, fragrance labs and manufacturers who need a consistent batch of raw material for uninterrupted conveyor-scale output.
The primary field of use for benzoin resinoid is fragrance and flavor manufacturing. Perfumers value it as a natural fixative that slows the evaporation of volatile aromatic molecules, extending the longevity of a composition on skin, fabric or in ambient air, while contributing a distinctive balsamic, faintly smoky, vanilla-like note to base accords. Beyond fine fragrance, benzoin is heavily used in scented candle production, sachets, incense sticks and cones, where it acts as both a binder and an aromatic component. In the food industry, the resinoid has historically served as a natural flavoring agent for select confectionery and beverages in tightly controlled dosages. In pharmaceutical and balm formulations, benzoin has traditionally been included in rubs, inhalation blends and topical balms thanks to its notable preservative character. In cosmetic formulation it appears in creams, solid perfumes and body balms as a natural antioxidant that helps extend the shelf life of the finished product.
Benzoin resinoid pairs well with other resinous and balsamic raw materials. A classic combination is achieved with Incense resinoid, which adds a more resinous, faintly citrus facet to the warm balsamic base. Another interesting pairing comes from Absolut Bean Tonka, which lends an almond-spicy nuance and amplifies the sweetness of gourmand accords. For easier dosing of the same raw material during trial batches before scaling up production, many formulators reach for the Benzoic Resin Essential Oil - Sumatran Resinoid
in a smaller format. Benzoin also blends readily with vetiver, sandalwood, frankincense, patchouli and vanilla, forming oriental, amber and gourmand accords used throughout the fragrance market.
In fine fragrance compositions, benzoin resin is typically dosed at 1 to 15 percent of the base weight, depending on the desired fixative strength. For candle applications, 0.5-2 percent is usually sufficient, while cosmetic balms and creams call for 0.3 to 3 percent. Since the resin has a thick, viscous texture, it is recommended to gently warm it in a water bath to around 50-70 degrees Celsius before incorporation, which makes blending with oils, waxes and alcohol-based carriers much easier. Prolonged heating above 80 degrees should be avoided to prevent the loss of volatile aromatic fractions. It is best introduced at the final stage of formulation, once the main components have been combined and the mixture has begun to cool. Store benzoin resin in a tightly sealed container, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, to preserve its aromatic and preservative properties over time.
Amber Balsamic Solid Perfume Base
Benzoin resin 20 g
Beeswax 55 g
Jojoba oil 90 g
Incense resinoid 5 g
Absolut Bean Tonka 3 g
Melt
the beeswax and jojoba oil together in a water bath at around 60-65 degrees
Celsius until fully combined. Warm the benzoin resin separately until softened,
then blend it into the melted base while stirring continuously. Remove from
heat, let the mixture cool to about 45 degrees, then stir in the incense
resinoid and tonka bean absolute until evenly distributed. Pour the warm blend
into small tins or glass containers and allow it to set at room temperature for
several hours away from drafts
