DIY trench candles: warmth and light from simple materials
Nowadays, when power outages are becoming more and more frequent, trench candles are once again becoming relevant. These simple but effective devices provide warmth and light during the most difficult times. What is a trench candle?
A trench candle is a simple homemade light source made from readily available materials. It consists of a container filled with a flammable mixture and a wick.Advantages of trench candles:
- Ease of production: You can make trench candles with your own hands from simple and inexpensive materials that are easy to find in the Soap Wholesale online store.
- Accessibility: No special tools or skills are required to make trench candles.
- Efficiency: Trench candles burn for a long time, providing enough light and warmth.
- Mobility: Trench candles are compact and lightweight, making them easy to transport.
- Safety: When properly made and used, trench candles are safe.
- How to make a trench candle with your own hands?
Materials:
- Tin can (it is best to use tin cans from stewed meat, canned fish or vegetables).
- Corrugated cardboard (you can use egg or fruit cartons).
- Paraffin (can be purchased in the Soap Wholesale online store).
- Wick (you can use cotton thread, wool yarn or cord).
Instructions:
- Prepare a tin can. Wash and dry the jar thoroughly. Remove the label and top of the jar.
- Make a wick. Cut the corrugated cardboard into strips about 2 cm wide. Roll the strips into a tight roll to form a wick.
- Insert the wick into the jar. Place the wick through the hole in the center of the bottom of the jar. Secure the wick to the bottom of the jar using melted paraffin.
- Fill the jar with paraffin. Melt the paraffin in a water bath. Carefully pour the melted paraffin into the jar, leaving about 1 cm of free space at the top.
- Let the candle harden. Leave the candle to harden at room temperature for several hours.
Adviсe:
- For a brighter burning, you can add a little dye to the paraffin.
- To make the candle more stable, you can fill it with sand or earth to a third of its height.
- Do not leave a burning candle unattended.
In addition to the practical benefits, making trench candles can be a fun activity for the whole family.
