Korean SPF: how to choose a sunscreen and where to buy UV filters
Korean SPF has become one of the most talked about products worldwide: a light texture, no white cast and no pilling under makeup. Yet the questions keep coming: do you need SPF in winter, how do chemical filters differ from mineral ones, and why do some sunscreens dry the skin while others do not?
Do you need SPF in winter and on cloudy days?
UVA rays pass through clouds and glass all year round, and they are responsible for photoaging, dark spots and loss of radiance. That is why Korean skincare treats sunscreen as the essential final step of the morning routine, even in November.
Chemical and mineral filters
Chemical filters absorb UV light and allow the weightless textures Korean sunscreens are famous for. Mineral filters such as zinc oxide reflect radiation and are usually better tolerated by sensitive skin, though they can leave a slight white tint.
If you make your own cosmetics, Octocrylene filter suits emulsions, while zinc oxide works for mineral formulas. Note that a specific SPF value can only be claimed after laboratory testing of the finished product.
How to choose a Korean sunscreen
Look for broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection and a texture that suits your skin type, and apply enough: roughly two finger lengths for the face. Reapply when you spend a long time outdoors. For glow under your SPF, see our guide to glass skin.
Mylo-Opt now imports from Korea and is expanding its range of ingredients for sun care.
Frequently asked questions
Can I mix SPF with foundation?
It is not recommended, because mixing spreads the protection unevenly. Apply SPF as a separate layer.
Which SPF is right for the city?
For everyday city life, SPF 30 with UVA protection is usually enough. For holidays and strong sun, choose SPF 50.
Why do Korean sunscreens leave no white cast?
They often rely on modern chemical filters and light emulsions that absorb quickly.
