Making an air freshener from a gel
Today we will learn to make a gel-based air freshener. The benefits are clear: you are always surrounded by your favourite scent, and by blending essential oils you can create any mood, from energising to calming.
What you need
Get 3 to 5 packets of colourful water beads, clean filtered or cooled boiled water and 2 to 3 drops each of three essential oils, such as lemon oil. You also need deep bowls, one per colour, and a sterile glass jar. There is a great choice of scents in our essential oils section.
Method
Divide the beads between the bowls, one colour per bowl, fill with water to the brim and leave for at least an hour. After an hour or so, top up the water if needed. In about 3 to 5 hours the beads will be fully swollen.
Layer them in the glass jar, adding a drop of essential oil or blend to each layer. Leave the jar slightly open in the room, and your freshener is ready.
Scent pairings
For energy and a good mood, choose lemon, bergamot and rosemary. To unwind after a busy day, try lemon balm, lavender, patchouli and ylang ylang. For a cosy evening before bed, rosewood, lavender and palmarosa work well, and for deep relaxation sandalwood, ylang ylang and neroli. Before the New Year holidays, fir, sweet mandarin and spruce create a fairy-tale atmosphere. Do not be afraid to experiment!
