New Year's Winter Wreath
Today we will make a New Year and Christmas wreath by hand. First we will build a base that is reliable, light and very sturdy, then decorate it in a wintry style.
The wreath base
You need pipe insulation 4.5 cm in diameter and 65 cm long, available at any hardware store, choose the one with the smallest inner hole. You also need 75 cm of thick wire for the frame, wide tape, masking tape, scissors and a ruler. The finished ring will be 24 cm across.
Thread the wire through the insulation and join the ends, pulling it tight so it runs along the inner side of the tube. Twist the ends crosswise into interlocking loops, wind them tightly and tuck them into the foam. Straighten the open section and tape the insulation ends together, several times so the ring holds. Shape it into a perfect circle.
Wrap the ring in masking tape: it adds strength, shields the foam from hot glue and can be painted if needed. Wind the first layer loosely, smoothing bumps with your fingers, and the second evenly and tightly with close turns. Squeeze the ring once more and the base is ready.
Decorating the winter wreath
For the decoration you need an artificial fir garland, pine cones, nutshells, small blue, white and turquoise baubles, white and blue acrylic paint, a brush, glitter gel, a glue gun, hairspray and salt. You will find many trims in our celebrations and decorations sections.
Lightly brush the cones with white paint so they look frosted and add glitter gel. Paint some cones and nutshells blue. Cut the fir garland into 6 pieces of about 10 cm. Lay all the pieces on the base first to see the whole design, then fix them with hot glue. Fill any gaps with small sprigs. Run a string of beads around the wreath and add a loop for hanging.
Finally, create a frost effect: spray a few spots with hairspray and sprinkle them with salt. Your winter wreath is ready. If you love festive crafts, try making a felted polar owl too.
